Before facing 42.195 km, every marathon runner knows there is a key ritual: carbohydrate loading. And if there’s one place in the world where pasta is an institution, that place is Rome.

In this guide, we explain why pasta is the perfect fuel, how to properly manage your pre-race carb loading, and most importantly where to eat it in Rome, with three Pasta in Corso locations in the heart of the city, all easy to reach and perfect for your pre-race meal. Considering the huge number of participants, it won’t be easy to find a central place near your hotel where you can enjoy a good, light pasta dish.

With us, you can book well in advance, choose the location closest to your hotel (we are in Piazza Cavour, Via Vittorio Emanuele and Pantheon, all central areas), and above all opt for a gluten-free option, whether you are celiac or simply sensitive to gluten.

As you know, the day before the race it’s essential not to take risks and to avoid sugars, fats, fiber, or irritating and hard-to-digest foods. A generous plate of gluten-free pasta can be the perfect solution. In all Pasta in Corso restaurants, you can choose your dish, even with a simple tomato sauce, opting for homemade pasta with or without gluten, always prepared in a dedicated kitchen.

Also, if you’re not among the fastest runners, remember that the marathon route passes near all our restaurants. On race day, your friends and family can enjoy a good plate of pasta, maybe at Vittorio Emanuele or Pantheon, and then come cheer you on near the restaurant, around kilometer 39, when you’ll need energy the most.

Why carbohydrate loading is essential before a marathon

Scientifically, it’s simple: when glycogen runs out, you hit the so-called “wall”, the moment when your legs suddenly feel empty. For such an important race, it’s essential to be prepared not only mentally but also physically.

Complex carbohydrates – like those in fresh pasta – are digested gradually and release stable, long-lasting energy. That’s why sports nutritionists and coaches have been saying it for years: the day before the race, pasta for lunch and pasta for dinner. Our fresh pasta allows for a more efficient, light, and digestible energy boost.

Why choose handmade fresh pasta

Fresh pasta offers several advantages for marathon runners:

  • it is more digestible, perfect in the 24 hours before the race
  • you can choose simple, low-fat sauces
  • you can request larger portions or multiple dishes
  • you can ask for lighter, low-fiber options
  • you can choose gluten-free if you are celiac or sensitive

Carbohydrate loading the day before: how to do it right

The day before the race is strategic. The goal is to fill your energy reserves without stressing your digestive system:

  • Simply seasoned pasta (light tomato sauce, olive oil and parmesan, butter and sage)
  • No fatty foods that slow digestion
  • Reduce fiber in the last 24 hours
  • Eat generous portions for both lunch and dinner
  • Stay well hydrated throughout the day

As for pasta sauces, you definitely don’t want to feel heavy during such an important race. So, sorry, no carbonara. You can try it after the race.

Here’s a small example of our fresh pasta!
